Shutdown Maintenance Equipment: Planning Access for Turnarounds

In a turnaround, availability beats price. Here is how experienced planners size and protect their access fleet.

Size the fleet against the critical path

Map every work front that needs elevated access, then allocate machines by height and footprint. Confining several trades to one shared lift is the fastest way to lose shutdown days.

Standby machines are insurance, not luxury

On a 21-day turnaround, a single day of lost access can outweigh the entire standby rental cost. Pre-position at least one spare unit per critical height class.

Certification and permits

Spark arrestors, gas testing compatibility, colour-coded tags and operator certificates should be verified weeks before mobilisation, not at the gate.
