Spider Lift vs Manlift vs Scissor Lift: Which Should You Rent?
Three machine families, three very different jobs. Pick with ground conditions and access route first, height second.

Start with the access route, not the height
Most machine selection mistakes on Saudi sites happen because the height was chosen first. A 32m boom lift is useless if it cannot pass a 1.2m gate or drive over a waterproofed podium deck, and a scissor lift is useless if the work is 6m out over a landscaped bed.
Walk the route from the gate to the work position and record three numbers: the narrowest width, the worst gradient and the allowable floor loading. Those three constrain the machine family before height ever enters the discussion.
Spider lifts: tight access, uneven ground, sensitive floors
A spider lift travels on rubber crawler tracks and stabilises on four independently adjustable outriggers. That combination lets it pass through standard doorways from around 790mm wide, climb kerbs and steps, and level itself on gradients where a wheeled machine cannot legally set up.
Because the load is transferred through outrigger pads and spreader plates, spider lifts are the default choice over polished stone, tiles, glass roofs and waterproof membranes. They are also the only realistic option inside mall atria, mosques, heritage sites and hospital courtyards.
The trade-off is repositioning speed. Setting down outriggers for every new work position is slower than driving a boom lift along a facade, so spider lifts favour precision access rather than high-volume repetitive work.
Manlifts and boom lifts: maximum reach on firm open ground
Manlifts, also called boom lifts, aerial work platforms or cherry pickers, are the most productive machines when you have firm graded ground and open working space. Diesel four-wheel-drive units handle compacted sand and construction ground with oscillating axles and rough terrain tyres.
Choose an articulating boom lift with a jib when you need up-and-over access around balconies, canopies or pipework. Choose a telescopic straight boom when you need maximum horizontal outreach and height in a direct line, such as tank shells or long facade runs.
The key advantage is driving at height: an operator can reposition along a facade or steel frame without descending, which cuts hours out of repetitive tasks like sheeting, bolting and painting.
Scissor lifts: vertical work over large floor areas
Scissor lifts only move vertically, but they carry more people, more tools and more material than either of the other families. For MEP first fix, ceiling grids, warehouse lighting and duct installation across a wide floor plate, nothing is more efficient per working hour.
Electric slab scissor lifts are narrow, quiet and non-marking for finished interiors. Diesel rough terrain scissor lifts with levelling jacks handle graded outdoor ground and heavier payloads.
The limitation is horizontal reach. If the work sits more than a metre or so beyond the platform edge, you need a boom or spider lift instead.
Quick decision table for Saudi projects
Indoor work on finished floors with tight doorways: battery spider lift. Indoor vertical work across a large floor plate: electric scissor lift. Outdoor facade or steel frame on firm ground: telescopic or articulating boom lift.
Refinery and plant work around congested pipe racks: compact tracked spider lift, with diesel boom lifts for open tank farms. Landscaped, sloped or heritage ground: spider lift with spreader plates and a load calculation.
